PORTLAND, Ore. — Iberdrola Renewables’ Klamath Cogeneration Plant in Klamath Falls, Oregon, earned a recertification award for continued participation in the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division’s (Oregon OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). In an awards ceremony held today at the plant, Oregon OSHA officials presented a VPP plaque and flag to Iberdrola Renewables’ employees. Klamath has maintained OSHA VPP Star status since February of 2011 and is one of approximately 30 businesses in Oregon that have achieved this elite status for their health and safety programs.
"VPP sites are good citizens and good neighbors,” said Michael Wood, the Oregon OSHA administrator at a ceremony today. “They are models for what employers and employees can achieve by working cooperatively with one another and with Oregon OSHA to achieve a level of worker protection that goes beyond compliance with government regulations. The people at this facility set the safety culture apart; they embody real and meaningful employee involvement, and truly drive the health and safety programs at this facility.”
VPP was initiated by the federal OSHA in 1982 as a way of encouraging companies to exceed minimum OSHA safety requirements. VPP partners with businesses and is designed to recognize and promote effective occupational safety and health management. Oregon OSHA’s VPP sites meet a rigorous set of health and safety benchmarks, and on average maintain injury and illness rates 66 percent below the average for similar employers within their industry.
“This recognition is incredibly rewarding, because it honors our most important goal of having everybody go home safely, every day. It means all of our employees are working as a team and dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace,” said Ray Martens, the plant manager at Klamath Cogeneration Project. “All of our employees had a role in the hard work it took to earn this award, as safety is part of the culture here.”
According to Oregon OSHA, 26 Oregon worksites and 2,334 worksites under federal jurisdiction share the honor of VPP designation.
