Heat Advisory and Cool Sweep in effect on Friday

The National Weather Service has issued a ‘heat advisory’ on Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for much of the region. With high humidity and a forecasted high temperature of 89, it’s expected to make the ‘heat index,’ the way it feels, approach the mid 90s.

There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the day.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Lakeshore Flood Watch for Monroe, Orleans, Niagara and Wayne counties from late Saturday night through early Sunday afternoon. The Weather Service says that the combination of record high lake levels and a brief period of moderate northeast winds will result in greater wave action and an increase in lakeshore flooding and shoreline erosion along the south shore of Lake Ontario.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren says that Cool Sweep operations will be in effect on Friday to provide residents with opportunities to get relief from the heat with cooling sprays from fire hydrants and extended hours at Genesee Valley Park Pool. Spray Parks will be open normal hours.

Cool Sweep — presented by Avangrid Foundation and RG&E — is the City’s annual public safety and customer service program that is triggered when the forecast calls for temperatures to reach or exceed 85 degrees.

The 2019 Cool Sweep season runs through August 24.
