United Way, Avangrid Foundation, others team up to offer Tax Help

NEW HAVEN — United Way and Avangrid Foundation are reminding area residents that volunteers can give free tax filing assistance to those who qualify at sites across Greater New Haven.
“IRS-certified volunteers work one-on-one with taxpayers with annual incomes up to $55,000 to prepare and electronically file their state and federal income tax forms at no charge,” according to a release from United Way.
The VITA, or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, sites throughout greater New Haven must be visited before the April 15 Tax Day deadline, the release said.
The Avangrid Foundation is the charitable arm of Avangrid, an Orange-based energy company. Avangrid is the parent company of United Illuminating Co. and Southern Connecticut Gas Co.
“We know that free tax preparation is just one way for working families to keep more of the money they worked hard to earn, and generous partners like Avangrid Foundation and their family of companies helps make this work possible,” Amy Casavina Hall, United Way of Greater New Haven’s chief impact officer, said in the release.
Last year, VITA served nearly 4,500 tax filers in greater New Haven, helping return more than $7 million to families in this region, the release said.
Filers must bring a valid ID, social security cards, wage and earning statements, interest and dividend statements, a copy of last year’s Connecticut and federal income tax forms, and proof of bank account routing numbers for refund direct deposit. For a list of requirements and VITA sites, visit uwgnh.org/VITA or call 2-1-1.
VITA partners include the city of New Haven, Avangrid Foundation, the IRS, Citibank, Citizens Bank, Newtown Savings Bank, Wells Fargo, and Connecticut Association for Human Services, the release said.
