Natural Gas Pipeline Expansions Provides Communities More Options

Projects Expand the Footprint of AVANGRID's Connecticut Natural Gas

ORANGE, CT – August 3, 2016 – Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) a subsidiary of AVANGRID (NYSE: AGR), Inc., is expanding its territorial footprint in the state and will soon provide natural gas service to the towns of Bolton and Coventry.

Once the projects are completed, the two Eastern Connecticut towns would represent the fourth and fifth new service franchises statewide for AVANGRID and its companies in the last two years. CNG and its sister company Southern Connecticut Gas recently began providing natural gas services in East Hampton, Deep River, and Essex.

The Board of Selectmen in the Town of Bolton voted on July 26 to authorize signing a contract that would convert five town buildings and schools to natural gas. CNG would invest approximately $1.13 million to install 7-miles of new gas main and services in a community not served by natural gas before. In addition to providing “fuel choice” to the residences of Bolton, the conversion will save the town about $50,000 a year in heating costs and provide annual taxes of about $30,000 from the gas line infrastructure.

The new main would run from Hebron’s Route 85 into Bolton Center Road, then to Route 44 and the intersection of Route 6 and Interstate 384.  Along the route of the new main, some 230 residential, commercial and industrial prospects would have the option to convert to natural gas.

Earlier in July, CNG broke ground on its fourth new natural gas franchise area, when it began work in Coventry. This $2.9 million project will extend 4 miles of main along Route 44.

The Coventry expansion will service municipal offices, two schools and the police and fire departments in town. The 65 residents along the route will also have the option to sign up and become customers of CNG. Construction will be completed by end of the year.

“We have a commitment to invest and expand our gas distribution system to ensure that our region has energy options that support both economic development and consumer demands,” said John Prete, Avangrid Networks’ president and CEO of Connecticut and Massachusetts operations. “In addition to creating jobs, we’re providing residents with another choice for cleaner, reliable energy that is critical to business development and the homeowners,” said Prete.

The projects support Connecticut’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy, which seeks to make natural gas available to as many as 300,000 additional Connecticut homes and businesses by 2023.
