ENDICOTT, N.Y. - The Mercy House of the Southern Tier has received a generous gift from the charitable arm of NYSEG's parent comapny.
The Avangrid Foundation gave $20,000 to the home for the terminally ill in Endicott.
The money paid for significant roof repairs, a new commercial dishwasher and anti-bacterial paint for the residents' rooms.
Mercy House has hosted 182 residents since it opened 22 months ago.
And while about 30% of the residents have donated money to help offset the cost of the care, Executive Director Linda Cerra says the organization must fundraise to cover the rest.
"We've been so fortunate to have that overwhelming response, with the grants that are coming in. Local community, businesses that help out, it's just amazing. So, we're able to have this facility for years to come," said Cerra.
Mercy House also received nearly $2,500 from Endicott police officers and their PBA from a No Shave November promotion in which they were allowed to grow beards that month in exchange for a donation.
Cerra says that besides monetary donations, there's a wish list of items to donate, such as coffee, dryer sheets and batteries, on its website, MercyHouseSouthernTier.com.
