Mad River Wind Farm
Working Together for a Clean Energy Future
Harnessing renewable energy resources like wind can lead to a better and cleaner future for all communities, as wind turbines create virtually no air pollution, no water pollution or hazardous emissions and consume no water. Notably, homegrown energy creates local jobs and energy independence, and helps support a strong manufacturing base in the U.S.
Avangrid Renewables is part of the Iberdrola Group, an energy pioneer with the largest renewable asset base of any company in the world. Our projects have brought real economic benefits for local business owners, schools and communities as a whole. We are proud to be a part of the communities where we live and work and are excited to work together with the North Country community on the proposed Mad River Wind Farm to create lasting economic opportunities for the area.
Expected Local Economic Benefits
Avangrid Renewables is proud to be a part of the communities where we live and work. Our projects have a proven track record of creating jobs and bringing real economic benefits to local business owners, schools and the community as a whole.

Project Location
The proposed Mad River Wind Farm would include the Town of Worth in Jefferson County, New York and the Town of Redfield in Oswego County, New York.
Wind Farm Generation Capacity
>Up to 350 megawatts (MW) of renewable wind energy, which is enough clean, homegrown electricity to power nearly 60,000 average New York homes annually.
The Facts about Wind Energy
The project proposal is based on proven scientific, engineering, health and safety, and environmental studies. In addition to being well within industry standards, the project is designed to operate in a responsible manner that meets all local, state and federal regulations. Local concerns about real or perceived impacts are carefully reviewed as part of the permitting process and guide our siting and development efforts.
|
Water — Of all of the energy options, wind power carries a legacy of care for the environment and wildlife. The electricity generated by wind turbines creates no air or water pollution, waste streams or hazardous emissions, and consumes no water. Pollution-free, renewable wind energy displaces harmful emissions from other energy sources, and has the lowest life cycle impacts of any form of energy generation available to our society today.
|
|
Wildlife — Avangrid Renewables was the first U.S. wind power company to voluntarily adopt an Avian and Bat Protection Policy, now known as the Wildlife Protection Program (WPP). The policy was drafted in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Our efforts have become industry best practices for monitoring and site design. The WPP is founded on our commitment to operate in an environmentally sustainable manner to avoid, minimize or reduce risk to birds, bats and other wildlife and their habitats.
|
|
Tourism — Avangrid has a proven track record of snowmobiling, hunting and other recreational activities continuing to thrive in other communities where we coexist. Recreational users would not lose access to activities or land, but would benefit from created fringe space, ongoing monitoring and preservation of the land.

|
Military & Radar — Avangrid works closely with the Department of Defense to evaluate any impacts of a wind farm project on a particular base. It is a standard, detailed review process that is taken very seriously. We strongly support responsible, effective actions to identify and address the potential conflicts of wind farms, airspaces and radar. There is a long history of wind farms coexisting with military facilities, airstrips and radar stations, but it takes close coordination. Avangrid is currently engaged in this process and will continue working closely with those involved. |
