PORTLAND, Ore. — Iberdrola Renewables, the largest provider of wind power in the world, has executed another long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Modesto Irrigation District (MID) for at least half the output from its 99-megawatt Star Point Wind Project now under construction near Moro, Oregon.

MID, the Modesto, California area's public power utility, will purchase the wind energy from Portland, Oregon-based Iberdrola Renewables to bolster its already substantial renewable energy portfolio from 12 percent to 16 percent. MID has a goal of getting 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2017.

"This PPA broadens the geographic diversity of MID's wind resources, uses existing transmission lines and puts MID in a good position to respond to California's changing renewable energy targets," said Allen Short, MID's General Manager. "Star Point wind power also represents the best value for clean energy, an important factor for MID customers in these tough economic times."

"Iberdrola Renewables is delighted to enter into our fourth power purchase agreement with MID, one of our many repeat customers," said Barrett Stambler, vice president of origination for Iberdrola Renewables. "The contract also demonstrates the strong market demand for clean, renewable energy as well as Iberdrola Renewables' ability to successfully tailor products to various types of customers."

Construction of the Star Point project, located in Sherman County, Oregon, created approximately 150 jobs over the summer and fall. Energy deliveries to MID are expected to start in 2010.

The Star Point project represents the latest of a total of 600 megawatts of wind power and a total of $1 billion of investment in Sherman County alone. Iberdrola Renewables has a portfolio of nearly 3,500 megawatts of wind power currently in operation across the U.S.

MID is a public agency established by vote of the people in 1887. Governed by a locally elected Board of Directors, MID operates on a not-for-profit basis with water and electric rates based on the cost of providing service. Its primary water source is the Tuolumne River.
