PORTLAND, Ore. — Iberdrola Renewables has extended and expanded an existing power purchase agreement (PPA) with Modesto Irrigation District (MID), the Modesto, California area's public power utility.
MID will extend an existing 25 megawatt (MW) contract with Portland, Oregon-based Iberdrola Renewables to June 30, 2015. Then from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2028, MID will expand the PPA to 50 MW. MID has a goal of getting 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2017.
"This continued and expanded PPA puts MID in an even better position to respond to California's changing renewable energy targets," said Allen Short, MID's General Manager. "With this expanded PPA, MID now gets 19 percent of its portfolio from renewables."
"Iberdrola Renewables continues to work hard to secure California resources for our California customers," said Barrett Stambler, vice president of origination for Iberdrola Renewables. "The contract demonstrates the continuing strong market demand for clean, renewable energy and Iberdrola Renewables' ability to meet the needs of our customers."
The power from the contract comes from the High Wind Energy Center located in Solano County, California. The project came online in 2003 and MID has been taking deliveries from the 162-MW project since June 1, 2004.
Iberdrola Renewables has a portfolio of nearly 3,500 MWs of wind power currently in operation across the U.S including a total of 380 MWs now operating in California. Iberdrola Renewables is part of Iberdrola Renovables, the largest provider of wind power in the world, with more than 10,000 MW of wind power in operation in 23 countries.
MID is a public agency established by vote of the people in 1887. Governed by a locally elected Board of Directors, MID operates on a not-for-profit basis with water and electric rates based on the cost of providing service. Its primary water source is the Tuolumne River.
