Free Park and Paddle Event at Bridgeport’s Knowlton Park Aug.17

The Trust for Public Land and REI Co-op are hosting a free community event featuring guided river kayaking, yoga and food trucks at Bridgeport’s Knowlton Park Saturday Aug. 17, from to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with rain date Sunday, Aug.18, at Bridgeport’s Knowlton Park, 405 Knowlton St.

The event is an opportunity to support the waterfront park, enjoy the outdoors and experience the water in a new way, according to the Trust for Public Land.

Formerly an industrial site, Knowlton Park was transformed as a welcoming green space on the Pequonnock River a few years ago. The site serves as an example of the vision for new waterfront parks and a linear pathway tracing more than 20 miles of Bridgeport’s waterfront, which the City of Bridgeport, The Trust for Public Land, and members of the Waterfront Advisory Board are working towards. In 2019 REI Co-Op showed its commitment to preserving public lands by awarding The Trust for Public Land with a grant of over $4,500 to support this project, according to a news release.

Supporters for connecting the community to the waterfront include Avangrid Foundation, Anne S. Richardson Fund, Aquarion, Inc., Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Horizon Foundation, Jeniam Foundation, Long Island Sound Stewardship Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation, Helen & William Mazer Foundation, REI and individual donors.

The Trust for Public Land creates parks and protects land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. Millions of people live within a 10-minute walk of a Trust for Public Land park, garden, or natural area, and millions more visit these sites every year.

REI says its helping lead a national push to imagine a world where nature is accessible within an easy walk from every American’s home or work place. Today 80 percent of the U.S. population lives in cities, which guides REI’s work to support rewilding projects in urban areas.
