CHOW Unveils Renovations, Made Possible by NYSEG and Avangrid Foundation
BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK — Friday June 30, 2017 — NYSEG, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), through the Avangrid Foundation partnered with the Dr. G. Clifford and Florence B. Decker Foundation, the Raymond Foundation, the Stewart W. and Willma C. Hoyt Foundation, Inc., and the Miller S. And Adelaide S. Gaffney Foundation to assist the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW®) with increasing their warehousing capacity to provide additional meals annually for families which struggle with food insecurity in Broome County.
The $90,000 Avangrid gift funded a new walk-in refrigeration-freezing system to enhance CHOW®’s ability to safely distribute a greater variety of healthier food choices, which will fight food insecurity and help prevent long-term chronic disease. The new cooler has already allowed CHOW® to more than double (308,747 pounds) the amount of fresh produce we have distributed year to date in 2017 and recover over 114,000 pounds of dairy products which were available from community donors.
“Prior to the renovations, CHOW did not have the capacity to accommodate large donations of perishable foods and fresh produce. Thanks to our partners, our newly renovated warehouse allows CHOW® to accept and distribute greater quantities of healthy foods to help our neighbors in Broome County,” said the Rev. Dr. Joseph Sellepack, Executive Director of the Broome County Council of Churches.
CHOW provides more than 1.8 million pounds of food a year to 87 partner programs located throughout Broome County.
“NYSEG and the Avangrid Foundation is a committed partner in lessening the burden that hunger has on communities and customers throughout our service territory,” said Nicole Licata Grant, Avangrid Foundation Director. “NYSEG and the Avangrid Foundation are grateful to play a small part in supporting critical infrastructure like CHOW, which enables our communities to make strides in the battle against hunger”.
