PORTLAND, Ore. — Continuing its legacy of utilizing sophisticated technology blended with innovative expertise to provide a more cost-effective solution for its customers, Avangrid Renewables has launched its “Green” Balancing Authority in the western region power sector.

“This is an exciting, dynamic moment for our customers,” said Avangrid Renewables CEO Laura Beane. “Yet, this is also a very logical next step for us as we have been running a “self-supply” renewable delivery program for our WECC customers for quite a while now. This allows us to offer our customers a more cost-effective solution and greater access to customized products and services.”

The “Green” Balancing Authority (BA) is the largest renewable generation resource-only BA in WECC, comprising more than 1,300 megawatts (MWs) of renewable generation facilities. It will utilize a combination of owned and contracted resources, hour-ahead capacity purchases and intra-hour energy purchases, which will minimize incremental carbon emissions from balancing the wind and solar facilities.

“Because we have 24/7 meteorology and real-time energy management desks combined with our industry leading National Control Center, we can make this happen for our customers,” explained Gerry Froese, Avangrid Renewables’ managing director of product development. “We’re looking forward to a future that allows us to operate with more flexibility and gain access to a greater number of market structures.”

Avangrid Renewables anticipates that the BA platform will provide the long-term certainty necessary to add more wind, solar and even battery storage facilities to its “Green” BA in the coming years, enabling the company to continue to provide an even greater level of service to its customers.
