KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Avangrid Renewables’ Klamath Energy plant celebrated a new safety culture milestone with a ceremony today. The plant received a recertification by the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSHA) for maintaining the highest designation for safety and health excellence in the U.S.
As one of only a handful of Oregon sites to achieve the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star status, originally obtained in 2011, the prestigious certification makes the plant part of an elite group of worksites to be recognized for safety excellence. VPP is a government-operated audit and certification program that promotes and recognizes facilities with outstanding occupational safety and health management systems. Klamath Energy was the first company to be awarded VPP Star status in Klamath County, and is one of just over 2,200 worksites nationwide to have achieved this level of worker protection.
Administrator Michael Wood of Oregon OSHA was on hand for the ceremony.
“Oregon OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program calls on employers to go far above and beyond mere compliance with the rules,” Wood said. “The Klamath Energy plant has done exactly that, and its focus on continuous improvement exemplifies what VPP is all about.”
“Obtaining and maintaining VPP Star status is not easy, so this achievement is a credit to the entire crew here at Klamath Energy,” said Laura Beane, the president and CEO of Avangrid Renewables. “This effort is a reflection of the diligence by each employee to take ownership of the safety program and make it effective.”
The award-winning plant consists of the 536-megawatt Klamath Cogeneration Plant and the adjacent 100-megawatt Klamath Peakers Plant which supply power as part of Avangrid Renewables’ integrated portfolio helping ensure reliability to its customers across the West, as well as process steam to a nearby lumber products manufacturer.
Oregon OSHA, a division of the Department of Consumer and Business Services, enforces the state’s workplace safety and health rules and works to improve workplace safety and health for all Oregon workers.
