Avangrid Foundation Supports New Outdoor Play Space at Portland Ronald McDonald House

The Avangrid Foundation and Central Maine Power celebrate ribbon-cutting of new play space.

Portland, ME — August 5, 2026 — The Avangrid Foundation, the philanthropic arm of leading energy company Avangrid Inc., a member of the Iberdrola Group, and Central Maine Power joined the Ronald McDonald House® Maine to celebrate the opening of its new outdoor play space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. at the Portland Ronald McDonald House. The new outdoor space was made possible thanks to the Avangrid Foundation.

"Access to a safe, welcoming place to play and connect can have a meaningful impact on the well-being of children and families facing medical challenges,” said Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda. “We are proud that the Avangrid Foundation helped make this outdoor space possible and grateful for Ronald McDonald House Maine's dedication to supporting families when they need it most.”

“When families are navigating a child’s medical journey, having a safe and joyful place to spend time together can make a tremendous difference,” said Pablo Colón, Director of Corporate Citizenship and Executive Director of the Avangrid Foundation. “We are honored to partner with Ronald McDonald House Maine to create this outdoor space where children and their families will be able to play, relax, and make positive memories while receiving the critical health care they need.”

This new play area enhances the Portland House’s outdoor space, providing an enjoyable environment for pediatric patients, their siblings, and families to play and relax together. The play area is located in the beautiful courtyard garden, which also features picnic tables, seating, and is fully enclosed, offering a welcoming space where children can play freely and safely.

“Our families often spend long, emotional days at the hospital,” said Will Groves, Portland House Director, “Having an outdoor space where children can play, and families can laugh together, is critical to the overall health of the family unit, which has a tremendous impact on the health outcomes for pediatric patients. We’re so grateful to the Avangrid Foundation, who helped us create this uplifting space for our guests.”

The Portland Ronald McDonald House can accommodate up to 32 families each night, providing free accommodation and meals for families with a child receiving mental health and medical care at nearby hospitals.
