Avangrid Employees Volunteer More than 5,500 Hours During Company’s Volunteer Week
Employees volunteered from coast to coast across all Avangrid’s service and operation areas
ORANGE, Conn. — October 19, 2023 — This month, Avangrid, Inc (NYSE: AGR) and its philanthropic arm the Avangrid Foundation hosted a companywide Volunteer Week to encourage its employees to get involved in their communities and spend time giving back. Today the company announced that throughout the week its team dedicated more than 5,500 hours of volunteer time benefitting 33 different nonprofit organizations. In addition, the Avangrid Foundation has announced it will make a donation to the nonprofits through its Energized for Good Program for every hour of employee volunteer time. For the Volunteer Week activities, this totals more than $82,000 in donations.
“At Avangrid, we want to create avenues for our employees to connect with and serve our communities through volunteerism,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO. “So many of the positive social impacts we help create are driven by our employees. Volunteer Week is an opportunity for us to plan group volunteer and giving opportunities while also encouraging individual employees to engage their colleagues in causes that they care about.”
Avangrid’s Volunteer Week is an annual event hosted in conjunction with the Iberdrola Group’s International Volunteer Week which aims to harness the spirit of giving in its employees across the globe. During the week, Avangrid employees engaged in volunteer work from coast to coast in New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon, Texas and South Dakota. The volunteer events ranged from helping nonprofits stock shelves or clean their facilities to repairing books and assisting at a senior care living community.
In Stratford, Connecticut, Avangrid’s Smart Grids Innovation team spent an afternoon volunteering at Sterling House Community Center. The 18-person group teamed up with Sterling House’s preschoolers to plant fall flower bulbs, build an outdoor play kitchen, and restock the community center’s food pantry. In Portland, Oregon, a group of Renewables employees helped Habitat for Humanity Portland Region build and decorate a custom playhouse for a local child going through a life-altering loss in their family. The custom design was created based on the child’s interests and featured sunflowers and a cat. In Rochester, New York, team members assisted Wild Wings, a nonprofit that cares for permanently injured and non-releasable animals, with stacking firewood, mulching pathways, and replacing rope barriers.
“The more of us there are volunteering in our communities, the more energy we create and the larger an impact we have,” said Pablo Colón, Director of Corporate Citizenship and Executive Director, Avangrid Foundation. “Our team volunteers year-round, but Volunteer Week is special because it spurs a large portion of our workforce to give back all at once. And since these events are largely employee-led, the organizations and causes are those that our team are passionate about. It’s amazing to see the impact this week creates.”
