American Wind Energy Association Honors PPM
June 3, 2002
PORTLAND, Ore. -- PacifiCorp Power Marketing Inc. (PPM) has been named "Market Maker" of the year for 2002 by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). PPM earned the award "for aggressively and effectively helping to build a market for wind."
PPM's Roby Roberts, Manager of Renewable Business Development, was also recognized with the "WINDPOWER 2002 Outstanding Support" award for his efforts to "ensure strong regional support for AWEA and WINDPOWER 2002." Both awards will be presented at the AWEA Windpower 2002 Conference and Exhibition here from June 2 - 6, 2002.
AWEA Executive Director Randall Swisher gave high praise to PPM's active role in the wind energy industry in the West and Midwest. "Wind energy is the fastest-growing energy source in the world, thanks in part to the leadership and accomplishments of companies like PPM," said Swisher. "PPM worked enthusiastically and effectively to make the WINDPOWER 2002 Conference and Exhibition an unprecedented success, and PPM's continued leadership will certainly play a part in helping the industry meet its goal of providing 6 percent of the nation's electricity by 2020."
AWEA reports a banner year for the American wind industry: 1,700 megawatts worth of new wind turbines were installed last year, more than in any previous year. More than 4,200 megawatts of wind have now been installed in the United States to date, providing electricity to power nearly 1 million average American homes.
PPM marketed 300 megawatts of wind power over the past year and plans to add 1,000 megawatts of new wind power to its portfolio by 2005. "We're honored that AWEA has singled out PPM for these awards," said Terry Hudgens, PPM's CEO. "We believe the best thing we can do to help develop wind power to its full potential is to supply reliable, affordable wind power tailored specifically for each of our wholesale customers."
PPM is the competitive U.S. energy subsidiary of ScottishPower. PPM is a leader in clean and green energy from environmentally responsible electric generation. Resources include the 263-megawatt Stateline Wind Energy Center on the Washington-Oregon border near Walla Walla, Wash., and the Klamath Cogeneration Plant, a 484-megawatt natural gas-fired, advanced combined-cycle facility in Klamath Falls, Ore.
AWEA, formed in 1974, is the national trade association of the U.S. wind energy industry. The association's membership includes turbine manufacturers, wind project developers, utilities, academicians, and interested individuals.
