PORTLAND, Ore., — Iberdrola Renewables, part of the largest provider of wind power in the world, today announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a new customer, the City of Bryan, Texas through its electric utility, Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU). The City of Bryan will purchase 30 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable energy from Iberdrola Renewables' Peñascal 2 Wind Project near Sarita, Texas for 15 years.
“Because the price of our fuel does not fluctuate, we provide long-term price certainty from a facility which generates power without air emissions or water consumption,” said Barrett Stambler, Iberdrola Renewables’ vice president. "Iberdrola Renewables is delighted to welcome the City of Bryan to our growing list of customers."
“We will meet a portion of the expected near-term demand growth of the BTU system’s ratepayers with clean, renewable energy at a price competitive with conventional alternatives,” said Dan Wilkerson, BTU’s general manager. The Peñascal Wind project is favorably located and has already begun operations, further diversifying and hedging BTU’s power supply.”
The 202-MW Peñascal 2 Wind Project in Kenedy County, Texas was placed in service in February 2010. Power deliveries to the City of Bryan will begin on January 1, 2011.
Iberdrola Renovables, with operations in 23 countries, is the world’s largest provider of wind power in both installed capacity (with nearly 11,000 MW at the end of 2009) and output (over 21 million MWh). Iberdrola Renewables is the second-largest wind operator in the US with more than 3,800 MW in operation at 41 wind farms. www.iberdrolarenewables.us.
