ALBANY, NY – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) will honor organizations that are significantly advancing development of the green power market. The annual Green Power Leadership Awards, held October 4th in conjunction with the National Green Power Marketing Conference, will recognize leading national green power purchasers and suppliers.
Awards for leadership in green power purchasing will be presented by EPA and DOE to 19 organizations. The highest honor, Green Power Partner of the Year Award, will be presented to Montgomery County, Maryland, Staples, Inc., Silk, Clif Bar, and the U.S. General Services Administration. Additional purchaser awards winners include the following: Salt Lake City, Johnson & Johnson, NY Municipal Wind Buyers Group, College of the Atlantic, Whole Foods, Interface, Inc., Alterra Coffee Roasters, Lundberg Family Farms, Edwards Air Force Base, Harbec Plastics, California State University at Hayward, Mauna Lani Resort, Rodney Strong Vineyards, and the City and County of San Francisco, Moscone Convention Center. Awards for leadership in green power supplying will be presented to 6 organizations. The highest honor, Green Power Program of the Year, will be presented to Austin Energy. Further supplier award winners include Lenox Municipal Utilities, PaloAltoGreen, Calpine, The Energy Cooperative of Pennsylvania, and PPM Energy, Inc. This is the first year for awards to be given in the supplier category.
“Progressive companies recognize that purchasing green power is an important step in corporate environmental leadership,” said Kathleen Hogan, Director of EPA’s Climate Protection Partnerships Division.
The national green power market is growing in response to demand from leading commercial and industrial organizations, universities, and state and local governments. Because of market demand created by voluntary green power markets, over 1600 megawatts of new renewable generating capacity has already been brought on-line, with another 400 megawatts planned.
"The 2004 Green Power Leadership Awards demonstrate an impressive commitment from a variety of organizations to both purchase and supply renewable energy," said Mark Ginsberg of the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Center for Resource Solution will present awards recognizing outstanding leadership in building and shaping the market for renewable energy. The Green Power Market Development Awards will be presented to the following: Western Washington Green Power Campaign, World Resources Institute, and Rob Harmon of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Honorable Mention will be given to the Maine Green Power Connection, and Alan Apt and Jim Welch of Ft. Collins, CO.
“The exceptional efforts of renewable energy marketers, purchasers and organizations continue to develop the market for renewable energy, and produce results worthy of national recognition,” saidJan Hamrin, Executive Director of CRS. “Their contributions through innovative marketing and outreach lead to the green power transactions that stimulate renewable energy generation, grow the economy, and help clean our air.”

The Green Power Partnership is an EPA voluntary program working to standardize green power procurement as part of best practice environmental management. Partners in the program pledge to switch to green power for a portion of their electricity needs in return for EPA technical assistance and public recognition.
