advanced metering infrastructure

Our subsidiary, Central Maine Power, recently completed the build-out of an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology platform in central and southern Maine.

By ending nearly all on-site meter reading activity, CMP was able to eliminate 1.5 million vehicle miles per year, and the resulting 1,050 tons of CO2 exhaust emissions. The Maine AMI enables gains in efficiency and energy conservation that reduce the need for extra generation and eliminate an estimated 42,000 tons of CO2, 46 tons of NOX, and 107 tons of SO2 emissions annually.

Avangrid Networks will use the lessons it learned in Maine to deploy AMI in New York, where it plans to install a total of nearly 2 million natural gas and electric “smart meters” across its service territories between 2014 and 2023.

Central Maine Power and its customers are already seeing the benefits of the AMI, including:

  • elimination of
    estimated billing
  • customer access to extensive energy consumption data
  • variable pricing opportunities
  • faster outage identification and response
  • remote power connection/disconnection
  • improved power quality and service reliability
  • reduced line losses
    and theft
  • reduced meter
    reading costs
